"The Archaeology of the Holocaust: Using Material Culture to Understand the Cost of Genocide"
1:15 to 5:00 p.m.
Pirtzker Theater
Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center
9603 Woods Drive, Skokie, IL

College Guest: Danielle Steen Fatkin, Assistant Professor of History

Join Knox friends for an afternoon of learning at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. The Museum explores the history of the Holocaust through documents and artifacts as well as the memories of survivors. It also places the lessons of that genocide within the context of current events.

Gather in the Pritzker Theater (note, this is a room location change) to hear from Professor Danielle Steen Fatkin. Archaeologists use things-left-behind in order to tell the story of those who do not otherwise leave their mark on history. With found objects, Professor Fatkin highlights what we can learn about the past that mainstream histories leave out.

Following Professor Fatkin's talk, move on to the Take A Stand Center, named one of the top 12 fall exhibitions in the world by Smithsonian Magazine. This is an immersive permanent exhibition with a forward-looking emphasis on multiple areas of social justice, and the world premiere of the interactive, holographic Survivor Stories Experience.

Your docent-guided tour will end with the Karkomi Permanent Holocaust Exhibition. This exhibit has a special focus on post-war life in Skokie, which had the largest per capita population of Holocaust survivors outside of Israel, and inspired the community to establish a Holocaust museum here.

Cost of $35 per person includes admission, docent-guided tour, and coffee-and-dessert reception.

RSVP by Thursday, September 27, 2018. Register online now or call Alumni Relations at 309-341-7238.
